How Windsurf marks a commit
Detection looks for any one of these signals. A commit needs only one to be attributed.
| Signal | Pattern |
|---|---|
| Co-author trailer | Co-Authored-By: Windsurf <[email protected]> |
Windsurf is Codeium’s AI-native editor. It marks a commit with a co-author trailer under the vendor’s own domain.
The trailer is the only signal for it here. That makes attribution precise when it fires and silent when it does not: unlike tools that also commit under a bot account, a Windsurf commit that loses its trailer looks exactly like a commit written by hand.
What detection misses
- Detection is the co-author trailer alone, so a squashed or rebased merge that drops trailers loses the commit entirely.
- Windsurf and Codeium are the same vendor and share a domain. A commit is attributed to whichever address the tool wrote, not to the product a developer believes they were using.
