How Codex marks a commit
Detection looks for any one of these signals. A commit needs only one to be attributed.
| Signal | Pattern |
|---|---|
| Co-author trailer | Co-Authored-By: Codex <[email protected]> |
| Message body | Generated by Codex |
Example
refactor: extract the retry helper
Co-Authored-By: Codex <[email protected]>
Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent. Commits it produces carry a co-author trailer
naming an address OpenAI controls, and some versions add a Generated by Codex
line to the body.
The trailer address is generic to OpenAI rather than specific to one product, so a commit attributed here means “an OpenAI coding tool signed this”, not necessarily one named surface. That is a limit of the signal, not a judgement about the tool, and it is the reason this page does not break the figure down further than the vendor.
What detection misses
- The trailer address is shared across OpenAI-authored commit tooling, so it attributes the vendor rather than a specific product tier.
- Chat-based workflows where a person pastes generated code leave no trace.
