Detection looks for any one of these signals. A commit needs only one to be attributed.

Claude Code is a terminal-based coding agent. By default it appends a co-author trailer naming an address Anthropic controls, which makes it one of the most reliably detectable tools in public history: the trailer survives cherry-picks and merges, and nothing else writes that address.
Two secondary signals exist. Commits made through the GitHub app appear under a
bot author name, and older versions wrote a Generated with Claude Code line
into the message body. A commit needs only one of the three to be attributed.
The trailer is a deliberate, visible choice by the person committing, which is why it is a defensible thing to count. It also means the count is a floor: a developer who removes the trailer disappears from these numbers entirely while doing exactly the same work.
What detection misses
- Attribution can be turned off, and many teams do turn it off in shared repositories.
- A reviewer who squashes the branch usually drops the trailer, moving the commit out of detection.
- Work done in a private repository is never visible.
