How Aider marks a commit
Detection looks for any one of these signals. A commit needs only one to be attributed.
| Signal | Pattern |
|---|---|
| Co-author trailer | Co-Authored-By: aider <[email protected]> |
| Commit author | (aider) |
| Message body | Generated by aider |
Example
feat: add the coverage block to the published document
Co-Authored-By: aider <[email protected]>
Aider is an open-source pair-programming tool that runs in the terminal and commits as it goes. It is unusually visible in public history because committing is part of its normal loop rather than something the developer does afterwards.
Three signals cover it: the co-author trailer, an author name carrying
(aider), and an older Generated by aider body line. Because Aider is open
source, forks can change any of these, so the figures here describe the
mainline tool.
What detection misses
- Aider commits on the developer's behalf by default, so a project that squashes on merge loses the signal.
- Self-hosted forks may change the trailer address.
